Tape Measure Video

Tim Carter explains how to read a tape measure. Tape measures are divided into different fractions of an inch. Special color markings are used to help with spacing studs 16 inches on center.

Home improvement or remodeling jobs require measuring something on almost every job. If you are not familiar with how to use or read a tape measure, Tim explains.

The majority of tape measures are marked in feet and inches. The individual inches are broken down into fractions - 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16. Each division is represented by a smaller and smaller line, with the 1/2 inch mark being the longest.

Some tape measures have color coded marking indicating the 16" on-center spacing.

Be careful when reading a tape measure upside down. Don't read the smaller divisions from the wrong direction. Measure twice and cut once!
